AMURTEL supports scores of educational project throughout India.
Through education, women will become free from the superstitions and
dogmas that have been imposed on them. They will learn how to take care
of their bodies, of their minds. They will learn the hidden history of
women's contribution to society. They will gain not only intellectual
wealth, but the necessary self-confidence to employ that wealth for the
benefit of society.
When women gain economic independence from men, they will also win back
respect. Dowry and other social ills will die natural deaths. As women
gain economic self-reliance, they will gain a voice in the household as
well as in the society-at-large.

Purulia District is one of poorest and most neglected districts in India . Conditions are especially severe for women as social, economic and gender discrimination is still rampant. The cycle of inequality begins at a very young age, as only a few girls finish primary school. Without adequate education, women rarely break the pattern of poverty, disease and early death. The Uma Nivas Project supported by AMURTEL strives to empower women and girls by providing them with alternatives.
List of current projects at Uma Nivas:
Three homes for orphan girls and young women
Three primary schools
Four all girls hostels, allowing girls from remote areas to board while attending school
An all girls high school
Two homeopathic clinics
A music college for girls
Developing a project to teach women sustainable organic farming as well as an adult literacy training program for women
