Haiti is a country with a huge unemployment rate, escalating violence, and major infrastructure inconveniences. This is a country where hardship is expected but the year 2004 has proven to be an especially difficult year for Haiti ; not long after a devastating civil war spurred by political unrest, the natural disasters began. The heavy rains washed out entire communities, leaving many homeless and without food, drinking water and clothing.
The AMURTEL supported Sunrise School in Port-au-Prince opened its arms to take in more children and their families, providing them with food and other necessary supplies to survive these hard times.

Students at the school
The project at a glance:
• Currently there are over 300 students between the ages of 3 and 17
• The school offers classes from kindergarten to sixth grade
• Two free meals are served to all students daily
• An embroidery cooperative provides jobs to 20-25 women
• The Food Relief Project provides 25 families with weekly food supplies
• The weekly medical clinic provides the community with medical services
• The solar oven project has, thus far, provided approximately 100
families with ovens that are an economic and ecological alternative to
conventional ovens.
